Summary

Teaching at the ‘military’s medical school’ (USU), I’ve seen military norms transforming dramatically. ‘Total Health’ is the measured improvement of the whole person within the whole community. Being ‘totally fit’ includes the mind, body, heart, & soul – equally. Even social networks & environments support health.

In 2010, the Joint Chiefs declared Total Force Fitness as:  “The state in which the individual, family, and organization can sustain optimal well-being and performance  under all conditions.”

They published the definitions of each of the 8 domains & suggested the metrics to measure them.

Then, they set out to train 1000’s of Drill Sergeants to train ALL of the troops – how to help each other – to be Totally Fit!

With this more holistic view, the Joint Chiefs aspire to end stigma (of seeking help), to prevent mental ills (suicides, depression, substance abuse), as well as to promote well-being of the entire population!  Watch the below video to learn more:
